Kuantan is the main economic city of Pahang by virtue of being the state’s capital. Among the many cities and towns in Pahang, Kuantan is crucial as it is the home of the state’s administrative centre and the connecting point for other places towards the eastern region of Peninsular Malaysia like Kelantan and Terengganu.

Transportation hub to the east region

One of the most significant features of Kuantan is its location which connects the west and east of Peninsular Malaysia. Kuantan is currently the eighteenth largest city in Malaysia with a population of slightly over half a million. It is also one of the oldest cities having been established back in 1851. Today, Kuantan remains one of the most significant cities in the east of Peninsular Malaysia.

Main roads and high-profile locations

On most days, Kuantan is always busy with vehicles and when the main roads are constantly congested. Among the most significant places that are known for high traffic include:

  • The North-South Expressway comes into Kuantan before continuing northwards towards Beserah and then towards Cherating. Along the way, it will pass by Esplanade Kuantan which will be adjacent to the Kuantan River. This highway is very important as it connects vehicles heading from the southwestern states (Selangor, Perak, etc) heading towards Terengganu and Kelantan.
  • The Interchange between Jalan Stadium and Jalan Bukit Sekilau which takes up the eastern part of the stadium. As the UTC is located around this enclave, vehicles can be seen piling up the traffic on most days (UTC is open 7 days a week). The congestion tends to be heavier when there are events or sports tournaments held in the stadium.
  • Jalan Tun Ismail – This is one of the main roads in Kuantan centre which connects both ends. Along Jalan Tun Ismail, is the Berjaya Megamall which is a common shopping centre that the locals like to visit. Traffic along Jalan Tun Ismail is always jammed especially during the mornings, lunch hour and evenings.
  • Shopping Malls – The locals enjoy visiting the malls in Kuantan in that they will visit the likes of the East Coast Mall, Kamdar and the Berjaya Megamall, among others. Hence, Jalan Dato Lim Hoe Lek plays a significant role in connecting these malls with other parts of the town.
  • Jalan Gambut – This is the road that connects with MS Gardens Hotel, as well as Wisma Persekutuan, where the state’s government offices are located.

Travellers’ profiles around Kuantan

Generally, travellers on vehicles around Kuantan are mostly:

  • White collar workers – Executives, managers and office workers travel along the main roads mostly during the mornings and evenings on weekdays as they come from other parts like Bandar Indera Mahkota, Beserah, Teluk Chempedak and Batu Hitam. A majority of these are single-driver vehicles, mostly during the weekdays. It must be noted that a lot of the white-collar workers in Kuantan work in the government and public sectors.
  • Students – Students in Kuantan travel mostly in buses. They usually commute to school in the mornings, late mornings, lunchtime and in the evenings between the outskirts into the town centre and vice-versa. While most of them travel on school buses, a large group of them also travel in their own private vehicles. This is most evident during weekdays.
  • Tourists and visitors in Kuantan – Local visitors drive into Kuantan from other parts of Peninsular Malaysia en route to the eastern coast like Teluk Chempedak, Cherating and the eastern states of Malaysia, which occur during any time of the day, season or time. Foreign tourists meanwhile are usually seen on express intercity buses that come into Kuantan before embarking on the nearby attractions.
