Astro Awani is primarily a news channel where it replaces the former Astro News which operated between 2002 and 2007. A pay television news channel, Astro Awani is currently among the most-watched platform among Malaysians for current affairs and updated news. Its viewers are mainly from Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia.
The former Astro News started in 2002 had content from other international channels like BBC World, CCTV-9, Eurosport News and Al Jazeera, among others while airing its own Astro News, with cooperation with Bernama. In 2007, Astro Awani was launched and it replaced Astro News in 2009.

Since then, Astro Awani has been growing in viewership who tune in for the latest developments and news in Malaysia and the region. The Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2018 named Astro Awani ‘The Most Trusted’ news source among Malaysians. The Astro Awani channel has grown and evolved to become one of the most relevant and related source in the country, especially at times when Malaysians are looking for updated and real-time news. This was verymuch evident during the 2018 General Election and the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. While it provides live news on the satellite networks, Astro Awani also has a YouTube channel and a news portal.
