Companies in engineering in Malaysia can be quite scarce especially in mechanical engineering. This is despite the fact that there are now more engineering courses available and offered by institutes of higher learning across the country.
Limited Professional Engineers.
Engineers are needed for their expertise in various market segments. They are employed in areas like construction, building services, manufacturing, aviation, oil & gas and many others.
However, the current landscape shows that there are currently only 1:100 Malaysians who are engineers. Within that ratio, specialized mechanical engineers are lesser. Hence, it must be noted that companies that offer such services are very limited as well. Among the traits of these companies include:
- Ownership – Most mechanical engineering firms are either foreign-owned or local companies with JV or partnership with foreign companies.
- Specialization – Mostly involve highly expert levels of services, focusing on industries like manufacturing, machinery, oil and gas and logistics.
- Location: Mechanical engineering firms are mostly found in urban locations and places where manufacturing and factories operate. This includes places like Klang, Shah Alam and Sungai Buloh in the Klang Valley. Besides that, they are also operating in locations like Johor Bahru, Bayan Lepas in Penang, Butterworth, Kota Kinabalu in Sabah and Miri in Sarawak.
