Penang is one of the northern states in Malaysia. It is made up of 2 main regions namely the Penang and the mainland. Its capital is Georgetown and is known for its sandy beaches as well as known to be one of the states in Malaysia with the best food like the Penang Char Koey Teow and the Penang laksa.
With a population of more than 1.5 million people, Penang’s main activities and commercial and business comes from the island which is connected to the mainland of Peninsular Malaysia via the Penang bridge while ferry services too connect people from both ends.
Its English name as Penang Island, is one of the 2 main regions that form Penang state and this is where one would find most of the commercial and tourists activities taking place. The capital of the state George Town is located here together with others like Batuk Ferringhi, Balik Pulau, Bayan Lepas, Sungai Nibong, Tanjung Bungah and Pulau Tikus among many others.
Province Wellesley, Penang
Province Wellesley or Seberang Prai together with Penang Island forms the whole Penang state where this is located on the mainland of the Peninsular Malaysia. Visitors to the island would need to get there through Butterworth, the main city here.
It connects to the island through the Penang Bridge with a second bridge project currently underway. For those who like to take the ferry services, this is also where one would alight.
Georgetown, Penang – (Capital)
The capital of Penang is Georgetown where it is located in the heart of Penang island. It is widely recognized as one of the most historical cities in the country where in 2008 it was certified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO which was also awarded to Malacca. Georgetown is the main city one would come to they are visiting other parts of Penang like to Batu Ferringghi or other parts.
This is where the express services starts and stops while those who are flying in would come through the Bayan Lepas International Airport located about 10 minutes drive away. The famed Fort Cornwallis too is located around here.
Batu Ferringhi, Penang Batuk Ferringhi is one of the major towns in Penang Island where it is known for its coastal seaside resorts and is regarded as one of the most developed stretch of resorts in the country very much like the coast of Port Dickson. Here is where tourists would usually come to enjoy a time away from the city and its bustling activities. It is strategically located very near to city center of Georgetown which makes it easily accessible and an enjoyable place to go. Here is where one would be able to find a lot of resorts ranging from the 5 stars to the budget accommodation choices.
Nibong Tebal, Penang
Nibong Tebal is one of the major towns in Penang which is located on the mainland at Seberang Prai. While a majority of Chinese living Penang island are from the Hokkien dialect, most of them here in Nibong Tebal are of the Teochew clan.
Nibong Tebal is naturally a quiet town although it is home to one of the major paper industry company in Malaysia. It can be reached via a half an hour drive from Penang island or through Butterworth which will take about half that time. There are temples here as well as the naturally rich Teluk Ipill while watching fireflies and catching of octopus too are some of the common favourites.
Bukit Mertajam, Penang
Located in the Penang Island, Bukit Mertajam is one of the major towns here. To get here, one would need to come through the bus terminal from Butterworth into Georgetown. It is located very near the main transportation stops of the bus, the rail as well as the ferry. Here is where one could visit the Bukit Berapit which is a hill which is known for its fruits plantations that include mangosteen, durian and nutmeg a common local produce here. There are also 2 Buddhist temples here while it is home to the Megamall Penang, the biggest shopping mall in the state. Other interesting place to visit here include the St Anne Church, the Pek Kong Cheng and many others.
Butterworth, Penang
The town of Butterworth is one of the most dynamic town in Penang. It is often compared to Georgetown in the island as Butterworth is the coinciding city of the mainland. It is less active despite being one of the major commercial areas of the northern state. This is because unlike Georgetown which is known very much for tourism, Butterworth is more an industrial and commercial town.
On top of that, it also serves as the main transportation hub that lead to the island. This is where one would get to the island through the Penang bridge as well as to get on the ferry. Some express bus services who do not go into the island will stop here and passengers will then be able to take connecting services.
Balik Pulau, Penang
Balik Pulau which means ‘Going back to the island’ is one of the major towns of Penang located in the island. It is famed for its durians and some other fruits. Apart from that, the red prawns from Balik Pulau are also very popular.
It is one of the 13 parliamentary constituencies in the state and is one of the towns with the largest land size. It is known very much for being a self-sufficient area of the state which has its own residences, fire station, post office, power station, police headquarters as well as an Islamic Syariah court. It is basically a township in its own accord although it is closely connected to other more commercial areas like Batu Ferringhi where it also has its own commercial centers with major banks.
Tanjung Bungah, Penang
Tanjung Bungah is often confused with that of Batu Ferringhi, Penang’s most popular beach resort as they both basically share the same coastline. Located when one travels from Georgetown to Batu Ferringhi, it is one of the major towns in the state as there are many hotels and resorts here which are often slightly cheaper than Batu Ferringhi.
The Floating Mosque is the latest tourist attractions here which was built in 2005. Due to its close location to the city center of Georgetown, Tanjung Bungah’s natural attractions have underwent rapid development in recent years where it has already enjoyed tremendous visits from the locals as well as international tourists.
