Share of Voice or SOV in Marketing

In marketing, SOV stands for Share of Voice.

It’s a metric that measures how much visibility, presence, or exposure a brand has in a particular market or channel compared to its competitors. Essentially, it answers the question:

“Of all the conversations, ads, or mentions in this space, what percentage is about us?”

How It’s Used

  • Advertising: Measures your brand’s ad presence versus competitors (e.g., % of total impressions, GRPs, or ad spend in a market).

  • Social Media / PR: Measures your share of mentions, hashtags, or discussions compared to other brands in the category.

  • Search Marketing: Refers to the proportion of search engine visibility (e.g., how often your site ranks in top results versus competitors).

Formula

In advertising:

SOV=Brand’s Advertising Spend or Impressions / Total Market Advertising Spend or Impressions × 100

Example:

If your brand spends RM200,000 in ads and the total market spend is RM1,000,000:

SOV=RM200,000 / RM1,000,000×100 x 100 = 20%

Why It Matters

  • Competitive Benchmarking – See how you stack up in visibility.

  • Brand Awareness Indicator – Higher SOV generally correlates with higher brand recall.

  • Market Share Link – Sustained SOV above your market share can help grow your market share (this is called excess share of voice or eSOV).
